When I placed text from Word (in Palatino Linotype) into InDesign, in some paragraphs it’s changed apostrophes to > and quotation marks to >>. I can’t change it on the keyboard: I have to copy paste an apostrophe in from somewhere else, so it seems like it’s something in that particular paragraph’s style, but I can’t find it. I also can’t seem to do a search to find everywhere this has happened: it will say there are no more instances, even when I can see that there are.

It’s a 90,000 word long document, so I’d rather not have to do a careful read over all of it if I don’t have to: has anyone else run into anything like this?

It sounds like maybe the document is set to have the wrong kind of quote marks? Check Preferences > Dictionary?

It says there that the quote marks and apostrophes are correct: do you know a reason that it would change in just one or two paragraphs?

It’s worth checking the language setting on the paragraphs affected.
If it’s set to French or something else that uses guillemet («») quote marks, and if smart quotes are turned on, it’ll change what’s typed.

Chris- The settings on the paragraphs do not appear to be changed.

The other problem I noticed is that the paragraphs are in Times New Roman. This is a problem I’ve mad before: my document is in Palatino, the word document I’m importing from is in Palatino, and yet random paragraphs are in TNR after I’ve placed them. It’s a pretty easy fix when I can do find font/replace all, but in this case, it means that I have to manually go with Find Font and manually change the punctuation in each affected paragraph, as “change all” will not correct that. Does anyone know what might be causing that?
