      Hi Folks

A quick question for you folks who are on the bleeding edge and have been using Id version CS5 for a while now.

Frame edge highlighting is useful when we're in production mode, but is obstructive when we're in concept and design mode. I'm sure there's a quick way to turn it off while you're working on design, but I haven't found it yet.

Anyone know how to turn it off? All my students have been asking this one and I haven't up with an answer (blush).

      Cheers and Thanks

      Tom

Funny, we just discussed that in the podcast that went live this morning. No, there is no way to disable that. Some folks like it, some hate it.

I honestly don't even notice it when I'm designing. I probably wouldn't have noticed it worked any different to CS2, CS3 or CS4 unless it was pointed out to me. If anything I find it more productive when designing. I had a bit of a hissy fit when I first heard about it. But there really isn't too much to get worked up about.

But I wholeheartedly agree there should be an option, there's options for Frame edges, for baseline grids, for smart guides, for the content grabber, surely they coulda/shoulda made an option for this too.

That was frustrating me, too… so I adopted these “practices” & made a shortcut that squelches 5 frustrations at once:

      • Always keep Frame Edges “showing”
      • Always keep Hidden Characters “showing”
      • Always keep Guides “showing”

      • Change the shortcut toggle for Normal/Preview screen mode from “w” to “Control-W.”
(That way it works even when I'm in a text box; and I don't have to think about what mode I'm in.)

      • Add “Control-M” to the (same) Normal/Preview toggle so that I can access it with my right hand when needed.

So now I can show/hide all of the above at once–from either side of the keyboard. Hope that helps!

      Yes.

Both groups are right in their own environment, as usual. (There's a blue cloud of obscenities over our college that was recently reported on the Toronto weather station ;–)

It's a great feature in production mode but the clutter is highly intrusive when you're working in concept and visualization mode.

(Which makes it a perfect candidate for an “on-off” switch.)

With InDesign serving very different needs for different pros, these kinds of production guides should always follow the interface maxim “The user is the chooser.” (Which Adobe does follow in many cases.) Then users are free to pick the best work mode for themselves.

As information designers who also do all of our own production, we absolutely need to turn these kinds of production aids on and off on the fly.

I originally switched to InDesign from XPress because it was a better visualization tool, and it has become a great production tool along the way too. But this one will have me gritting my teeth in pain until it's changed.

Now I'm off to the Feature Request form at Adobe. ;–)

Thanks for the input, as always!

      Cheers

      Tom

      Hyland –

Are you saying you got the Frame edges to hide even when you work on the file and mouse over them?

If so, I just might kiss you (don't be afraid, my wife says it's not that bad.)

I'm guessing not. But you move your mouse off page to avoid the frame edges when you want to look at the design.

But yes, that's what we'll probably end up doing.

      Cheers

You can just switch to any other tool other than a selection tool. Like the text tool. Then frames are not highlighted, they are only highlighted with the selection tool. I usually have the text tool on 90% of the time out of habit, and I use CTRL to click objects which is a modifier key to get back to the selection tool.

While I'm at it I have to say I hate the placement of the Page and Gap Tool in the Tool Panel, it should be at the bottom.

Alas, there will be no macking in this topic today.

Tom, I misunderstood what you were trying to do. Sorry that I couldn't help you out!

Create very light custom colors for each layer, using Layer Options. Although frame edges will still highlight when the Selection tool rolls over, the light colors are unobtrusive.

You can create and save a custom color for every layer, in the color picker that appears in Layer Options > Color > Custom (at the bottom of the color pop-up menu.) Custom colors do not appear in the named-color pop-up menu, though you can store the colors themselves in the color-picker's swatch grid.

The worst part may yet come.

Ideally, Adobe would add a Toggle Frame Highlighting option in a new version — even more ideally, it would be Off by default ;)

Now imagine the hoards of bewildered CS5-first-time-users that upgrade to this new version and flood the forums with “ooh it doesn't highlite edges anymore, and i was counting on that feature! Adobe pleaz bring it back!”

Not a great workaround but: If you absolutely have to have items on a page minus the frame highlights, make the page a masterpage. This could be useful for slideshows/presentations, although I would have though Acrobat would have been better? Anyway, masterpage items don't highlight. Or, go to the layer options palette and select white as the layer colour. Technically the frame highlights are showing but (as long as you have a white background), they won't be visible. Best I've come up with…they should put an option on this feature though.

Count me as another longtime Adode disciple who would love to see frame edge highlighting have an on/off switch in place as soon as possible. Currently I work in CS4 as much as possible in order to avoid the visual noise.

I didn't even notice the frame highlighting until it was pointed out. Don't really get what people have against it? Now that I have noticed it it really helps me during design and layout…

One more reason for having it be a toggle – I access my work computer at home from my personal computer, and the automatic highlighting really makes the remote connection drag.

How do you know it's the frame highlighting causing a drag?
