Hi Guys, got a bit of a prob with exporting pages of my magazine to PDF.

I have to export them to PDF/X-1a:2001 as my printer requires.

So using Indesign I export the pages one at a time, using a preset I have saved which is based on a PDF/X-1A:2001 Standard (from the standard dropdown) through Acrobat 5

After sending 36 pages to the printer yesterday they got back to me saying half of the pdfs were PDF/X-ia:2001 but half of them weren't – I have no idea why this would be as I exported them all using the same template.

Anyone have any idea whats going on?

Well, PDF/X1-a is based on Acrobat 4, not 5. Huge difference: transparency is not flattened in acr4. So if there was any transparency on those pages, your printer probably didn't like it.

Just to avoid confusion…I know David meant transparency is not flattened in ACROBAT 5.

Now, a few points…X/1-a is used in pretty old workflows. A modern printer should have no problem with transparency.

Instead of exporting the pages one at a time, export the entire file and then use the extract pages command in Acrobat to chop them up. But that brings us back to this printer. A modern printer should have no problem taking a multi-page PDF with live transparency in it. Why not have a chat with your printer and find out just exactly why he' requiring you do this.
