TOC troubleshooting suggestions?

      Hi!

I’ve been working on a book, and I am having some trouble with styles not showing up in my TOC. The documents making up my book are versions of documents from three other books, but share common style names, like “h1”, or Heading1. One section (6 files) all came from the same book originally, and none of their Heading1 styles will show up in my new book’s TOC. (the files have been re-saved as new documents – I’m not trying to assign the same .indd file to two different books).

The style names all show up in the TOC dialogue window, but when I generate the TOC, they do not appear. I have also checked the story editor, in case they were there but invisible, or something. No dice.

At first I wondered if using the same style name, but with different style definitions, was a problem. So I changed the style of one of the entries that was working, and it made no difference – it still pulled in correctly.

I also tried changing the name of the style in one of the .indd files that is not working, and sure enough, I saw my new style name in the TOC dialogue box. When the TOC generated, however, the heading itself still did not pull in. (again, checked the story editor as well; it’s really not there.)

Finally, I have also tried creating a new style from scratch, and assigning my troublesome heading to it. Again, I saw my brand new style in the dialogue box, but nothing actually pulled in to the generated TOC.

The same document also has a different entry for the TOC (with a different style), and that entry pulls in fine. So I know it’s finding the document… I have tried assigning THAT style to my troublesome heading, too, and again, it doesn’t pull in. (The other heading that had worked before continued to work.)

I am out of ideas for things to test! Anyone have any suggestions?

I would check to ensure that the style name is EXACTLY the same; no extra spaces, etc. — I prefer using the Synchronize Book feature to ensure that all the style names are exactly the same, though you need to be careful that this doesn’t override stuff you don’t want it to (check the Synchronize Options dialog box before proceeding).
