Table of Contents not loading for certain chapters of a book created in ID CS5.5
I thought this might be helpful for anyone with a similar problem.
I have a book file with 6 chapters; when creating a TOC, I found that certain chapters had a TOC generated for them; others didn’t.
I double-checked the TOC settings, deleted prefs, export as IDML & re-import, created new books etc. and the same problem occurred; I opened one of the problem files outside of the book and found that generating a TOC from that file produced a TOC heading but no actual TOC. It also automatically inserted the TOC into the first page opening threaded text frame. Not good.
I tried removing fonts, retesting. Then I visited the ID troubleshooting page
(https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/troubleshoot-damaged-indesign-documents.html) and worked through until ‘9. Copy page elements into a new document.’ worked for me – selecting the pages in the palette and dragging them into the new document.
My fix was:
• Create backups of all files
• Create new ID file
• In new file:
> Load master pages from a chapter that worked with the TOC
> Load all text styles from the same chapter
> Test TOC in this document – it should work
• Check the new document for discrepancies between the new and original file (ie. style tweaks made to that particular doc etc.)
• Replace the file in the book – TOCs should now work.
I can only assume the problem lies with corrupt styles in my case.
