Hi people…now taking the first steps into eBub and having a few teething problems!

For the first time I have been playing around with the TOC generating tool in ID, and very useful it is to.

However, when I export the book for ePub, and view the file in Adobe Digital Editions, non of the TOC entries show up on the left hand side.

      Why not?

The TOC have been included as I can see them in the ePub file, but the entries are not 'linked' and don't appear in the left hand margin and navigational entries.

I have the boxed ticked that asks if I want the ID TOC entries included…I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm gonna go back and have a look through the various tutorials inline etc, but they all seem to work through this OK, yet following the steps mt TOC info just doesn't want to come across.

      Info that may help:

6 files, combined into one book. TOC then generated and saved. Exported to ePub. Viewed in ADE. Contents present but no side entries showing.

Any help to an ePub newbie welcomed!!

When creating the TOC did you tick the “Include PDF bookmarks”?

      Layout>Table of Contents

I don't know if including pdf bookmarks makes any difference.

In fact, you don't even need to build a TOC in the document at all. The most important part is to save a TOC STYLE (layout > toc styles), and then choose that when exporting the epub.

(though I like the term “ebub”… that's epub with a head cold, I guess.)

Bingo…nice one David…I was leaving the TOC style as default thinking this would be OK, but obviously not. By creating a style and applying it in the export options it is now working as desired.

I'm new to this function, and the whole world of ePub, as are most of our clients…so expect some more daft questions shortly as I continue on this steep learning curve!

I'm off to eBub some more! ;-)

Reviving this thread: I have similar, but more puzzling issue: when using KIINDLE plugin it does not see my TOC style at all – there is an empty list with just Default available – and understandably the resulting MOBI file claims that the TOC was empty and was not included for that readon.

Have you ever came accross that?

I am tryint to convert a book made up by 4 documents

Do I have to have the same TOC style in the other documents as well? (for some reason it messes up the formating (I have no clue why that should be the case… but at this moment it does…)

      Thanks Tomas

When you're using InDesign's Book feature, the TOC style needs to be saved in the “main” INDD file; the style source document.

If you're using the Kindle plug-in, be sure that in the main document, you've placed the TOC (being sure to turn on Include Book Files in the TOC Style dialog box) as part of the file. You don't need page numbers in the placed TOC; it's probably better not to include them.

Then when you export to Kindle make sure you're chosing that command from the Book panel menu (Export Book for Kindle).

More information is available in the Kindle Publishing Guidelines, a PDF you can download from the same page you downloaded KindleGen and the Kindle Plugin

Thank you – the “main” TOC document did not occur to me as possible problem.

So I have made some progress. – I have a MOBI with TOC, yet no all TOC items are included – what I have is a subheading sequence with about 18 items – and only 1,2 and number 8 appears in the TOC in MOBI – inspite of the fact that they are the same style and do generate consistently in IND.

I am going to have a read of the guidelines now to figure this one out.

I really appreciate your help Anne-Marie. Tomas
