      Hi Friends,

      can someone tell me how I could change the “No style” text format?

      If I set No style to be the default paragraph style then any new text I enter becomes 12 pt Minion Pro Regular. The situation is the same if I set the paragraph style of an existing styled text to No Style later. But sometimes, in documents I get from the clients this default font is Times New Roman, not Minion. It seems to be a document property, not an application default. If it is really the document that wears this property then I should be able to set it somehow, shouldn’t I? But I can’t, or at least I don’t know how to do it.

      So what is the truth? And more importantly: how could I change this default format? Setting the font when nothing is selected doesn’t do the job.

      Best, and thx:
      Tamás

      It is a kind of crazy, advanced technique and does not always work. Keep backups!

      Thank you David, it was a very interesting tour into the Abyss. :)
      So this way we can change the default font of an existing document. I think I will make good use of this knowledge.

      How do you think: is there a way to somehow change the same thing for all new documents?
      I mean… is it possible that Indesign gets this 12 pt Minion font thing from another editable file?
      An even deeper default…

      Sorry for the double post, I pressed Submit button twice because seemingly nothing happened after the first click.

      I searched the home folder of Indesign for the word “Minion” and found the file Predef_huHU.iddx that contained almost the same info you showed in the article of Indesign Secrets:

      <RootParagraphStyleGroup>
      <ParagraphStyle Self=”ParagraphStyle/$ID/[No paragraph style]” Name=”$ID/[No paragraph style]” FontStyle=”Regular” PointSize=”12″ KerningMethod=”$ID/Metrics” … [bla-bla] …
      <Properties>
      <AppliedFont type=”string”>Minion Pro</AppliedFont>

      It looks very much like that deep default of “No paragraph style”, doesn’t it? :)
      There are such “Predef” files for each language, and there is also a file named simply Predef.iddx too.

      Maybe some time I will try to edit this file, but I’m a bit afraid of doing so. So if I don’t check in for a long time, tell my mom I love her! :)

      Hi David, Help. We have used custom basic settings for indd here at Storey Publishing for years.
      We do lots of reprints, pickup old files, combine indd files, ebook conversion.
      I read Anne-Marie article about not changing basic and now this.
      We are thinking about switching to Indd default basic settings but I am nervous about how this might effect us moving forward.
      I am almost sure we set our basic font to Times 12 on 12 for this document property font thing, we also changed a few other attributes, keep lines, hyphenation …

      Any advice?
      Thanks so much

        I never recommend people use Basic Paragraph style. As you have probably seen in other posts, it is not a good idea to use Basic, if you can avoid it. If you’re going to change to something, change to a new paragraph style (make one yourself, such as “StoreyBasic”)
