      Hello all,

I couldn’t be more newbie has I haven’t even open InDesign yet.

I’m creating a planner and so far I’ve used whatever was available in Microsoft and OpenOffice.

Although I’ve been able to do what I wanted, I am kind of limited.

After doing research I’ve realized that InDesign is what I needed all along.

I’ve watched a few tutorials, videos, and read a few blog post BUT it seems soooo complicated for someone who has no background in Design, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc…

So, my question is: Where should I start?

I know… get InDesign… ahah I’m waiting because the free trial seems to be only 7days (if anyone has a link for a 30 days trial that would be awesome)

      I mean should I take a class on Lynda.com?
Should I invest in a in person class?
Should I buy a for dummies book and go through that (if only I could find it to download online)?
Should I focus on tutorials, classes especially design for planners?

Should I just do all of the above.

      What would you suggest?

      Thank you

      Sylvie

To be honest–that’s though to say.

How complicated in your planner? Actually–what do you mean be a planner? To me a planner is a calendar.

Are you going to be using InDesign a lot of the time or occasionally?

The first thing I would do is google basic things about InDesign (such as paragraph styles, character styles, etc.) to get you familiar with the terms and the basics.

I have no opinion so far as Lynda.com. Personally I’ve never needed to watch or learn anything from those videos, but some people say it’s helpful. For a newbie such as yourself–it probably would not be a bad idea.

Also–try to search here for topics. There is a ton of helpful info at this site.

A huge bit of advice: Definitely stick around here. Ask all the questions you want. Everyone here is willing to help answer your questions, and in many cases–look at your files to help. There are no stupid questions or anything. We all were newbies at one time, and I think I can say everyone here will answer your questions and help guide you.

It may take a day or so before some replies, but most times answers come quickly. I know I log-in three or four times a day.

If you can give us more info about your project(s), that would be very helpful.

You might also see if there is a user group (IDUG) near you. I believe there are groups in Montréal and Québec.

Thank you all for your response.

I’ve started with InDesign and I’m learning online.

      So far, so good.

I’m at least sure now that InDesign is the right product for me.

      Have a great day,

      Best regards

I would definitely recommend Lynda.com. The membership is very affordable, and you’ll be able to have access to whichever videos you need, right when you need them. I’ve seen that when newbies take a full day class, there is just too much information to absorb all at once. Videos are a great way to go. David Blatner (who also run InDesign Secrets) has a number of great, very thorough courses on InDesign: https://www.lynda.com/InDesign-tutorials/InDesign-CC-2017-Essential-Training/466174-2.html

And I also highly recommend visiting this site often, listen to their podcast, and sign up for their newsletter. I got my InDesign training right here at InDesign Secrets. I never took a college class, and it was years before I even took an InDesign seminar. A hug amount of InDesign brainpower hangs out on this site, just waiting to answer people’s questions.

      Welcome to the club!

      Thank you Kelly.

I’ve been doing the training by David on Lynda.com and I’m learning so fast.

I will have to check out more of the forum and web site.

I just became a premium member so I now have access to everything. :o)

I like knowing that you were able to learn InDesign by yourself. It’s very encouraging.

      Thanks again

      Sylvie
