The Case of the Disappearing Text, but Differently

Hi All, I am a longtime user of InDesign, but only recently started to have this intermittent problem. I am using ID CS6.

When I am editing a page, if I, for instance, double-click on a word to delete it, the whole page might go blank, except for the small black square that represents the selected text. Or, I don’t have to double-click it; I can just select it by dragging or select-all. Or, I can hit Command-s to save it. Same thing. And it only happens to the page I am on, not even the facing page. Command-z undoes the damage and then it might not happen again for hours or minutes. I am at a complete loss.

I’m on a MAC using Mojave, but it also happens under High Sierra and even Yosemite, although maybe a little less often under those—hard to say because it is intermittent.

Any ideas? I have read other posts about disappearing text, but this one seems different from those others.

      Thanks in advance,
      Debbie

Sounds like a weird screen redraw bug. Next time it happens, try pressing command-option-/ (slash) and see if that redraws the page properly.

Is CS6 under Mac OS X GPU accelerated? If so, test if this also occurs without. If it doesn’t, file a bug report.

GPU acceleration has caused all kinds of weird redraw bugs on Windows and Adobe’s general advice seems to be “oh well. Just turn it off then”.

      Hi,
Thank you for your reply. I am using CS6 in a MAC environment, not CC. Does this still apply and, if so, how do I check to see if the GPU is accelerated? This is a new Mac, 2019, but it also happened on my old Mac, 2011 (I just got this new one).

      Hi David,
Many thanks for your reply. I will try that.

Most appreciative of all your work for inDesign. Definitely would not be where I am with the program (designing books, mostly) without your and Anne-Marie’s help.

      Hi David,
Well, your solution brought it all back…now what does that imply?

Hi Debbie, I’m glad our work has been helpful for you! :-)

No, the GPU acceleration is just in CC, not CS6.

Unfortunately, what you describe is very hard to figure out. I’ve had it happen to me, and then it just goes away. It could be fonts, or InDesign preferences… Be sure you have the latest version of whatever version you have of InDesign. Sometimes quitting the app and launching again can help.

But if the shortcut (or zooming in/out) helps, then you know that the screen disappearing isn’t “real.” That is, it’s not really deleting anything. It’s just InDesign not drawing the screen properly.
