I have a document I am setting up and before each chapter I need to have a separate page that is a tab sheet. I have created text boxes on the tab space and went to create and insert a Running Header text variable to pick up the chapter title on the second page but it won't read it. I moved just the text box containing the variable to page 2 and it worked, but when it is on a previous page it won't read the paragraph style.

Is there another text variable type I can use. I need to insert 8 tab section page starters?

The only reason I can think of that it's not picking it up is because the text in the body is not styled with the appropriate style.

No, I don't think ID can look ahead at the next page for the variable text. It can only look at the current page and the previous pages.

You might consider using the Section Marker feature instead (and setting that up in the Section and Numbering Options dialog box.

Or, if it's a big project, perhaps Power Headers from in-tools.com could do the trick.

Oh right – read that one wrongly.

Hi, guys. I've searched a number of places and I can't find a way to get CS4 to pick up autonumbered paragraphs in the running head. Para style is set to autonumber, autonumber is set to a separate char. style, I have a variable for the para number and a variable for the text and it picks up only the text. So, for example,

      1.1 System Variables

comes up in running head as System Variables

      Any ideas? Thanks very much.

Never mind! I found a way to do it with PowerHeaders.

Glad you found Power Headers from in-tools.com, vickihnh. It's quite amazing.

Yes a glaring oversight in the variable headers done in InDesign.

I've campaigned, probably solely, since CS3 to have this fixed. Sadly two versions later and it's still pants. :(
