I am experiencing a problem where my text boxes and text within them
randomly is lost. It started at the same time another bug appeared which caused
random text throughout the document to change Character Style. This bug
occurred when I tried to adjust the height of a text box to bump the last line
of that page to the next page. When I adjusted the height, a few of the
headings changed from the Bold character style to the regular style I had set
up. But it also did it to random text on pages nowhere near the page I was
adjusting. In one instance, it changed one character style in the middle of a
      word.

But back to the disappearing text… There is something strange going on
with the text threads where the missing text is located, but I can’t figure out
a fix or a reason. Normally the text thread goes from the bottom of one page to
the top of the next. This thread goes from the bottom of the first page, to the
middle of the next page spread, then straight down the the middle of the next
two spreads, then to the top of next page where the text and graphics start
again, but it doesn’t start where the text left off, it starts 7 pages down and
all the text and graphics in that missing section is gone. The text threads all
have the small blue arrow showing the text continues on. When I click on the
blue arrow at the bottom of the last page with text, which loads the cursor
with text, and try and drop in into a text box on the next blank page, InDesign
      crashes, every time.

The two problems may be unrelated, but they appeared at the same time and
previously the file had no issues. We had to revert back to a backup file and
only lost a few hours work, but would like to know either a fix for the issues
or a cause so we can avoid this in the future.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Have you tried showing hidden characters to make sure there aren't any page breaks that were accidentally inserted? Since there is clearly something strange going on with your character style, I would look into that and make sure the keep options and indents are all set correctly. I'm not totally sure though, that seems really strange.

Yes, hidden characters are shown. Nothing strange there. I did check the keep options and the possibility for a no-break to be accidently applied. Neither seem to be the problem. I am thinking it has something to do with the text threads because they are a mess in that section, but it crashes when I try to adjust them and it appeared out of nowhere. Another weird thing I just noticed was that the footer which is on a master doesnt appear on those blank pages. It recognizes they are their because the pg numbers jump from 79-86, but those pages are completely blank and the content is gone.

      Thanks for the ideas.

I just noticed something else. All the links on the missing pages are still in the links panel, but they have a PB (pastboard) icon next to the link name. It isn’t off the page though, it is somehow locked in that text thread. CS5.5 by the way.

Yeah, that sounds like there are some breaks ( or “no-breaks”) applied accidentally. I see similar problems when someone copies text from an older document to paste into a new document where there are styles with the same name, but different settings. If you think your paragraph styles are properly applied, try clearing all of the character styles to “none”. You may have to manualy reapply paragraph styles or character styles to applicable sections to get back to normal.
