Hello. I am working on an exhibit catalog and I set my info boxes up on the Master pages of the In Design document.
The only way I can “change” the text in the pages of that document is to “overide” the box, which then I am allowed to add my new text. My question is there another way to do this so that if I change the positioning of the text box on the Master page and/or delete some of the lines of text in my Master page text box it relates to the pages of the document?

      Hi Suzanne

In the master page, when you select the text frame does the page icon top left of the frame show that it is the primary text flow, i.e. has the page icon with arrow? If so, applying that master to your pages should make that text frame editable without having to override it as a master page frame, and if you make changes to the master they should be reflected on the pages.

Re-reading your message, I may not have understood all the detail. You mentioned about deleting lines of text in the master page text box, but one thing to add about the primary text flow frames on the master page is that they cannot already contain any text.

I guess with problems like these it can sometimes help to share an image of the page setup, because for example for your catalogue there may be a different approach to the one you’ve taken for positioning the catalogue entries. I’m guessing you’ve created a grid on the master page with each entry being a separate text frame? And this is what you override on the catalogue pages to position each entry? Is your catalogue entry text one text file, or one file for each entry, or is it in a spreadsheet, for example?

I’m not sure my first answer is much help, but I’m sure what you’re trying to achieve is not too difficult with a bit more context!

      Thanks
      Nick

Thanks for trying to help me Nick,

Not sure how I can share screen shots with you here but yes I do get the “page icon” on the Master page text box. But I filled it with text so sounds like I should not do that. I can try a test but if I don’t fill with text on the Master page then I can fill the box with text on the page document without over riding the box, correct? My main thing to do is move the text boxes on the Master page and have them move automatically on the document pages. Always learning!!!

My other hick up is making an Index in In Design. I guess there is no way (from what I have tried to do) to import lists of words that I want on the index. Each word needs to be copied and added seperately into the Index window.
      Thanks for you help!

I tried a test on the Master page text box without text. I still had to over ride the text box on the document page in order to put text in it.

Yes, if you have a text frame on the master page (whether it is a primary text frame or not), then you put text into it on the document page, it overrides the text frame. However, its position should still be linked to the master page. That is, if you move the text frame on the master page (or change its size or rotate it or change its fill or stroke colors) it should reflect that on all the document pages — even if you put text in it.

That is the way it works for me.

As for indexing: that is a very different topic! :-) There are many people asking similar things here in this forum about indexing, so definitely search for that. You’ll find references to the Indexmatic script, for example.
