Synchronize book causing creating non-primary text frames

I’m tearing my hair out here!

I’m using CS6. The project is a 750+ page book in 58 chapters all in separate files with an INDB file. I’m using primary text frames in the master pages with Smart Text Reflow enabled. When I Synchronize the book (all Synchronize options are enabled), all my text gets moved to new (non-primary) text frames. I then have two sets of text frames: a new set of non-primary text frames containing the text and a set of empty primary text frames.

To make matters worse, the new non-primary text frames are all overset because they default to “Ignore Text Wrap” off and it seems the underlying primary text frames are causing the text to disappear.

I have had to manually fix this too many times already and it’s getting tiresome.

Any ideas what the heck is going on and how I can stop this?

      Thanks!

      Brad

Not sure, but my guess is that some left-hand pages are becoming right-hand pages, and vice versa… when that happens, InDesign has to reapply the master page.

That said, while this happens with regular text frames on master pages, it shouldn’t happen with the Primary Text Frames. Are you sure they’re set up correctly?

Hi, David. Thanks so much for responding. At first, I thought it was a left/right switching issue. But even if that was it, I wouldn’t expect the results I am getting.

I reviewed the links you provided on primary text frames and I think I have this set up correctly, as follows:

      – “A-Book Page” master spread has 6 text frames. The headers and footers are regular text frames. The two content frames are empty primary text frames, threaded across the spread.

      – “B-Chapter Page” master spread is based on the “A” master with the headers deleted. There are only two text frames which are primary text frames, threaded across the spread.

      – “C-No header, no footer” master spread is based on the “A” master with the both headers and footers deleted. There are only two text frames which are primary text frames, threaded across the spread.

On the “B” and “C” masters, the primary text frames are “live” on those masters, i.e. not inherited from the “A” master. I wonder if this could be the problem?

      Cheers!

Here’s an update. I’ve been plodding through the book, synchronizing only two documents at a time. If I select two documents (one of which is the style master) and choose “Synchronize Selected Documents” from the Book panel menu, everything seems to work as expected. However, if I click the “-><-” icon at the bottom of the Book panel, the non-style master document gets mangled as I mentioned above.

Oh, and the document gets mangled even without a left/right page switch.

Just tried 3 documents. Even using the Book panel menu Synchronize Selected Documents mangled up one of the documents. I’m thinking there must be some corruption in the documents and I should launder them through IDML.

Maybe so… but actually now that I re-read your original post I realize that this is a synchronization problem. I must have been reading too fast earlier. Have you tried synchronizing without the master pages? Often when I synchronize across documents, I try to have as few checkboxes on as possible… if you’re only synching styles, then have everything else off.

That was it, David! I unchecked the “Other” category in Synchronize Options and then did a full Synchronize Book without anything blowing up!

Thanks so much again for your help!

      Cheers!
