swatch dependencies?

Hey y’all. I have what may be a crazy notion.

I’m developing a template which, to be most useful for me, would need to have swatch dependencies akin to paragraph style dependencies. For instance, I’d like to set the template to have a few master swatches, on which child swatches are based, such that in early days of working on a book I can manipulate masters and then tweak the children as required as things get more refined.

I know I can create a new swatch from the paragraph and character style dialogue, but I’d like there to be a pre-existing parity between paragraph styles and swatches, and master swatches that control any number of those other dependents.

Does what I’m saying even make sense?!

Would it be possible to script such a thing in Javascript?

Definitely scriptable. But the hard part is figuring out what the dependencies would be. Like, what does it mean for one swatch to be based on another?

      Many thanks David!

Basically I have a complex template with lots of paragraph and character styles that are unique to various parts of a book, but are ‘based on’ styles such as Root Serif, Root Sans, H1, H2, et cetera. I’d want to establish parity between these styles and swatches so that when I start a new project I can change the color for my H2s all at once, but already have the DOM model swatches for things and can change backmatter H2s, let’s say.

I wonder if what I’m looking for could be achieved using custom font books (ACB file), so I can create in essence font books for each project where my ‘master swatches’ would be the values of the book, and then I would just have all my specific style-related swatches to customize.

Just not sure the right path to pursue.
