I want to have both the superscript and subscript on top of each other, as in some math variables. Can this be done in ID?

      Thanks for any help :)

You need to manually fake it: create a new character style with superscript, horizontal and vertical scale set to 80%/80%, and a baseline shift of about 2 pt to move it up (superior) or down (inferior).

Experiment with the exact numbers to see what works best with the font you are using.

Hmmm, I am a newbie, but *think* I understood what you said. After doing this, I still can't get the superscripts and subscripts to be “on top” of eachother. The baseline shift only goes up/down. Wouldn't I need something that shifted left/right?

Ah — sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you were referring to something like e1+x² — with that second x² with a superior 2 as well, making it “double-superior”.

The only way to get what you need, a superior character on top of an inferior, you have to decrease the space between them. I rarely need that, so I make do with a manual trick: put the cursor between the two and press Alt+Left arrow, decreasing the kerning between them by eye until it looks good. Sorry, I don't know of an automated or styled trick for this.

Thanks. That may be good enough. The other thought would to just bring it in as an equation, like the rest of the equations. I just thought it would end up looking better if it was done natively rather than as an inserted PDF.

      Jongware,

That actually looks pretty, I just had to play with it. Even though it is manual, it is still better than importing and equation and aliging it, etc. Thank you sir!

You could also set the super/subscript part of the expression in a separate text box (top number [return] bottom number) and then insert it as an inline graphic, adjusting up or down as necessary. It would be easy to change the size of the numbers and leading and to cut and paste, etc.

This is also handy if you need to insert a line with some small type below it, like an underline for a name or date with the word “name” or “date” under. It's much easier than trying to put the word on a separate line and get it aligned with the underline above.
