This happened a couple of times in the last year but it has happened twice today: I’m unable to switch tools, ID is stuck on the grab tool (hand). I’ve tried all kind of tricks but nothing works; I have to quite InDesign and reopen it to continue to work. Anybody else had that problem? Any idea at which level the problem could be: InDesign, my Wacom tablet (but everything is normal with the other applications), the system?

I have that same problem a few times a day. I end up having to click and click different things for 20 or 30 seconds.

Or I’ll try to add kerning in the tool bar box and I can’t. I click and click and click. So I click something else, and then click back in and it’s fine.

It is frustrating. Originally I thought it was my mouse or something, but I don’t think it is.

I can’t offer any suggestions except to grin and bear it, and try not to start cursing and swearing and scaring your co-workers (like I do).

You may get advised to rebuilding your preferences, but I don’t think that’s the problem.

I don’t use a Wacom, so I don’t know about that. I’m just on my Mac and I have those issues.

EDIT: And others at work have also experienced this.

Me again, more than 2 years later but this time with InDesign CC 2018. Same problem, where the cursor is stuck being the grabbing tool. Didn’t happen with CC2017.

      Any ideas?

I just developed the same problem for the first time! Anyone out there has a suggestion? I tried restarting and changing the keyboard, to no avail.

No idea. As Dwayne said, rebuilding your preferences may be the answer, or it may not be.

I don’t have a permanent solution for this problem but I can get the grab tool to let go by zooming in and out a few times using different methods (not all of them work every time but one of them will, so use them in succession): changing the percentage in the zoom window in the bar on top, zooming with the cursor [cmd-spacebar and cmd-opt-spacebar], using the View menu; do it until the cursor comes back to normal. This could be a clue to the source of the problem…

This is getting progressively worse. I have Indesign running on 2 computers and the grab bar gets stuck every so often.
I’m beginning to suspect that it has to do with Apple screen share. When screen sharing from mac #3 to mac #1, the grab bar will lock up, but all it needs is a couple of bangs on the space bar.
But after using screen share, (back on mac #1) the grab bar gets truly stuck, and I need to restart indesign, or restart my mac in order for it to get fixed.
I seldom screen share with mac #2, but I did so today. Now my mac #2 got stuck with the grab bar.
Restarting just caused Indesign to crash at startup.
I trashed preferences, which didn’t help.
I reinstalled the app and it’s working

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

A temporary fix was to search for text with command F, type in any existing word, and the tool highlights the text. Once in the text frame, you’ve got a blinking cursor, so text editing is possible. But that’s just for when you’re desperate to finish something without taking time to troubleshoot!
