I posted this query yesterday but, for some weird reason, it no longer appears. So I?ll try again.

I have only been using InDesign CS6 for a few weeks and have discovered one feature I find annoying but do not seem to be able to turn it off. Whenever I create a new document, when the document window opens, it _always_ has a column running down the left side of the window with the heading of Structure. I have no doubt this is very useful to some users of ID CS6, but I have not yet found a use for it in the work I do and so each time I need to drag the dividing line between the Structure column and the actual document to the left so that the unwanted column is deleted (or at least hidden) thus giving me more usable screen real estate.

I have checked all my preference settings and cannot find anywhere that this feature can be turned off. Am I missing something simple? Or complex?

      Hi Furry,

And I’ll answer you again (I think they’re still having issues with the new site; my profile is hosed from the changeover).

With NO documents open, go to View > Structure > Hide Structure. That should do it.

      Furry,

There have been several posts that have gone missing in the last fews days. In most cases, the OP checked for answers and responded positively before the thread was lost. however, I did respond to one or two that were immediately lost.

Someone did answer your post. I believe it was Gert. (Scratch that… it was Bob)

In case he does not see your repost, the answer is:
      1. Close all InDesign documents.
      2. Go to View > Structure > Hide Structure

Now when you create a new document, the default will be to keep it hidden.

There are other useful defaults that you can set. For example, if you like to have certain color swatches in all of your document (company colors etc), you can create them with no documents open. All new document will have these swatches automatically added to each new document.

Thanks Bob and Justin (and Gert, if it was you also).

I was right — I was missing something simple!
