      Hi there,

I have had quite the journey with the project I am working on.

The Word document I imported had a lot of hyperlinks, not a problem. Just the problem is, the placement of those links is corrupted somehow. The link is added, and is highlighted with a character style. But the actual clickable link is far away from the actual text that is meant to act as the link. I would be ok to delete the link and re-add it manually, if it were not present in on a 100 page document with over 300 hyperlinks across 6 languages.

If you have any tips for fixing this, I am very open to your suggestions.

Are the hyperlinks OK in Word?
Are they formatted with character style in Word?
Do they need to be active in InDesign?

Thanks for the reply, yes I can confirm that they are styled correctly in Word and that they unfortunately need to be active as the PDF needs to be printed and available as a digital PDF on the client’s website.

It’s not an issue related to justification by any chance is it?

        Hi David,

Could you be a bit more specific as to what the issue would be with justification? The client (against my preferences and recommendations) has gone for left-justified text throughout the document. It’s never been an issue with links previously.

The Word doc could have some internal corruption. Try any of these methods to clear it out.

      1. In Word, save as .doc instead of .docx and see if that helps
      2. Place the Word file in a temp InDesign file, just one page (don’t bother flowing it). Click inside the frame and File > Export > RTF. Open the RTF in Word and save with a new name as .doc or ,docx. Try placing that one.
      3. In Word, select all the text (Command/Control-A), then deselect the final paragraph marker (Shift-Left arrow). Copy the selection to the clipboard. Paste into a new Word document. Save as .doc or .docx and see if that works.

I meant for instance if it’s trying to centre justify a two word paragraph there would be a lot of space.
A long shot and probably not the issue.

Thank you, this does work. However, it also removed all the word styling with it and shows the incorrect hyperlink placement (but at least this is aligned with Indesign now). So the hyperlinks need to be replaced in Word.

If possible, try saving your Word file as .rtf and import that instead. It often leads to cleaner hyperlink translation into InDesign.

I set Word to save my documents as .RTF instead of .DOCX. This solved 2 problems:

      1. Even older versions of Word (before version 2007) can open it and
      2. No more problems with InDesign import.

DOCX plug-in in InDesign doesn’t work properly. For example, some footnotes are not imported correctly, or not at all.
