      Hello,

I need some help with identifying a character that appears all over the text when editing in the Story Editor, these invisible characters look like miniature versions of any empty rectangle here’s a screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/amDWT

background: this text was imported from a word document, also when I copy paste text to a new InDesign document these characters disappear

The symbol itself looks like one of the placeholders that you sometimes see for “character does not exist in this font”.
Is it possible to copy the symbol from the Story Editor and paste it into a google search? That sometimes works to identify it.

Does it affect the appearance of the text on the layout itself (i.e. *not* in Story Editor)? If not, I’d guess it’s a Word formatting character which has no effect on the layout.

      Good luck,
      Chris

You might also try changing the Story Editor font (in Preferences > Story Editor) to something that has a character set that includes more characters — something designed for the languages you’re working in. (I’m not sure if that’s Greek or Ancient Greek or…)

      Thanks for the answers everyone!

It’s modern Greek, but even if I switch to US English this character appears every time I hit return and “overlays” the first character only (whereas in the original text it appears in random places as well. Moreover, most of my files are in Modern Greek and this is the first time I’m seeing this character.

The character encoding looks ok (I checked a sample of characters and all seems to be fine)

I’ll keep investigating and let you know if I figure this out!
