      Dear All,

I'm working on a book. I have problem with the space between the footnotes and the main text which vary according to the paragraph text. I'd like the gap between the text and the footnotes to have the same space value everywhere in the book but as you can see on the jpegs it is different. I have attached jpegs of the pages and the values of Keep options and Document footnote options.

Could you please tell me can I control the space between the footnotes and the main paragraph text so that they have the same space everywhere in the book? Also please tell me are the value settings in the options OK? Thank you so much in advance.

There is no setting for an exact amount of space between the plain text and the first footnote, because:

      1. Footnotes are always placed at the very bottom of the text frame.
      2. The text above the footnote and the text inside the footnote may have a different leading.
      3. Widow/orphan prevention may move one or more lines from the straight above the footnote to the next page.

Point (1) is totally beyond your control.

To counteract Point (2) you could make the leading for your footnote text the same as the leading for your main text. The leading needs to be the same. The only alternative is to have the same number of lines in all of your footnotes.

Point (3) can only be circumvented if you totally and utterly ignore all window and orphans in your text (which is, actually, frowned upon) and never use any blank line at all in your text (because that might end up right before a footnote), and — worse of all! — if you don't mind having a heading at the very bottom of a page … (because moving the heading to the top of the next page would leave a blank line above the footnote, and you don't want that).

As you can see — hopefully! –, these alternatives are way, way more ugly than having slightly different spacing between note and text. Absolutely nobody would noticed that, but having headings at the bottom of a page …

Just don't be bothered about this.

(Seems like a very cool text, though. Heavy Metal Rulez!)

      Dear Jongware,

Thank you very much for your time and advices! I appreciate it!

Yes, I understand. It's better to have different space between footnotes and the main text than having headings at the bottom or worse of all – widow… etc. : )

      Just 3 more questions, please.

1). I made the same leading for the footnotes and the main text. It seems better now. Do I need also to make same number lines in all of my footnotes now and if so how I can do it???

2). How can I prevent blank lines at the bottom of my main text after using the Keep Options for widows/orphans for my paragraph? I have attached my Keep Options windows. Are they correct???

My Text Frame Option > Vertical Justification > Top. If I use Justify instead of Top in the whole book is OK but the last Paragraph in a chapter goes bad. Do I need to use Justify for a book or Top. Which is more correct?!

3). In the Footnote Options I use for the First Baseline > Offset > Fixed > 4 mm Could you tell me is that correct and should I use not Fixed option?!?

I hope you are not bored with my question. Yes, the book is about Judas Priest : )))

The only way to prevent blank lines is by manually changing the text or adjusting the text formatting. It is a very slow process.

I usually use vertical justification > top and adjust the pages. But it is rare for me to care if there is an extra line at the bottom. Are you sure you need to be that precise?

      hi David and Jongware,

Well, I've been wondering about the 3 issue which I posted above. Could you let me know about each of them?!
