Please could someone tell me a way to sort layers alphabetically in InDesign?

I don’t think you can do this automatically, but you can drag layers up and down of course.

There are also plug-ins that help you manage your layers, such as: https://www.dtptools.com/product.asp?id=lgid

Thanks David. Its a real shame that Adobe have yet to add this option. I’ll have a look at DTP Tools but I’m sure its compatible with CC.

Actually, I have to ask: Why would you want them alphabetical? The order of the layers determines the stacking order (or z-order) of the objects on the page. So it’s extremely rare to want them in alphabetical order. I usually have “text” over “graphics” and “background” at the bottom…

One of my clients has lots of car dealership locations. The base layer artwork will be constant across all these locations, the only variable will be the individual address/tel/email/web for each branch.

Its this information that I’ve placed on separate layers, and as a result I’ve also named each layer to match the town/city it relates to. Been able to sort the layers alphabetically would be a big help. As it is I’ll just keep using ‘Find & Replace’.

I’m doing election ballots for 40 districts, so they are all on the same level in terms of overall hierarchy, but it would be nice to have the option to sort my layers alphabetically automatically rather than have to manually drag 40 layers into alphabetical order. Is this something that could be scripted?
