This is my first post on the forums, and I am asking what I hope is a simple question.

I received a PDF document as original art for a print job that set up for the wrong trim size, nor did the crop accommodate spiral binding. I placed the PDF in an InDesign file, resized it, and corrected the trim and crop of each individual page. This took a while, and I was thinking the entire time that there has to be a better way.

Thanks for any input on how I could have saved some time

It depends on which program originally made the PDF. You could also open the PDF in Acrobat and set page bounding boxes there, but you’d still need to place all the pages into your InDesign document. Ideally, it would be best to get the native files and fix the problem there.

But of you’re placing each page into InDesign and correcting the trip and crop, you could set up the graphic frame with an Object Style that sets the graphic with a particular fitting and placement. That way, you could set up the graphic frames (on your master pages) for each of your facing pages, and then load all the PDF pages into your place gun and place the pages all at once.

jmchase, this may not work for your job, but I work at a print shop and we deal with crummy PDFs a lot.

If the document is sized in the center of the PDF, make a1-page InDesign document that’s the size of the whole PDF. Window->Utilities->Scripts->PlaceMultiplePage PDF

Then size the document as it should be, and hopefully the crop marks line up.

As for the spiral binding, not sure. We use Enfocus Pitstop Pro to fix that sort of thing (It’s expensive, but there’s a trial download) https://www.enfocus.com/en/products/pitstop-pro

Setting up an Object Style would have been helpful, and I use a plugin that creates an InDesign file from a multipage PDF. Even though the InDesign file created from the multiple page PDF would have been the wrong size and crop, could I then use something like the Zaneli MultiPageImporter:

      https://creativepro.com/zanelli-releases-multipageimporter-for-importing-both-pdf-and-indd-files.php

to import that .indd into a new final size .indd document that corrects the sizing and position? Is there a version of the script for CC 2015, or something else that provides the same functionality?

Thanks Kelly and Colleen for the ideas.
