Is there a way to create a pdf that shows the index markers? It would be a handy way to proof that everything has been caught for indexing.
If that is not possible, could I use GREP to find all the index markers and then change the letter following the marker to say a character style, for example, bold red. This would make it possible to export a pdf with the index markers indicated. After the export, once could just run a replace to replace that character style with none to remove the printable marker.

I haven’t seen that, but I do know there are some good index utilities at the following links:

      and

      Simple:

      Grep Find: ~I.
Replace by format: condition “index entry view”

Don’t use a char style but a condition!

I like that idea of using a condition (instead of a character style). That might stand out even more. You would also need to enable “show and print” in the Conditional Text panel, so that the condition “wavy lines” appear in the PDF.

Thank you, Michel, for the ~I. grep… I did not read the original question carefully enough. Yes, this grep would work great.

I agree that it is necessary to replace the format.
