I have a text frame with one paragraph and I notice that even though the text frame is wide enough to accommodate a short word on Line 1, the word will appear on Line 2. Hyph. is OFF; there isn’t a soft return ahead of the word. There doesn’t seem to be any other formatting applied that I can see. If I type the word again, (ex., of of word) the first “of” is on Line 1; as soon as I remove the second “of” (place the cursor behind the text and backspace), the first “of” again drops to Line 2. WHY???

I suspect it might have something to do with whether you are using Adobe paragraph composer or Adobe single-line composer.

Place your cursor in the paragraph and then look at the fly-out menu at the extreme right edge of the Control Panel that runs across the top of the InDesign screen. See which of the two is checked. Select the other one and see if that makes a desirable difference.

I don’t pretend to understand how Indesign works out how to apply your choice, but it does mean words shift back-and forward from one line to another when other words are deleted or lengthened. It is much smarter than I am!

If that text is left or right justified, this might also be due to “Balance Ragged Lines”.

You could perhaps tweak the whole paragraph with a slight leading decrease. That should bring it all into line without showing any text as distorted.
