Hey all, just stumbled upon this forum and have a quick question. I'm working on a file for a client and it features multiple columns on a page with membership directory information spread over many pages. Some of these entries (ie. ones that advertise in the book) get highlighted with a shaded “box” behind it. The previous person who laid this out set it to automatically flow these boxes when new copy was added or deleted.

Looking at the file, I've come to the conclusion that this isn't a box object placed in the text box; it seems as if there is simply a shaded background behind the desired text.

Sounds simple, right? The problem is I can't figure out HOW she did it! I need to add new highlights and take out some older ones and so far I've only been able to “cheat” it and do long workarounds – I can't seem to figure out what method she used.

I've actually put off posting this question because I'm thoroughly embarassed; this seems like its a dead simple thing to do and I feel stupid for not being able to figure it out. Can anyone help me?

I have the file available and am happy to send it to anyone who wants to look at it (it's a hard thing for me to explain and I'm sure I'm not being as clear as I probably could). Thanks in advance!

Here is a screenshot if that helps at all – again, I'm happy to send the file if someone wants to look at it. Hate to bug anyone but this problem is getting under my skin. Thanks again!

If the shading flows with the text, then it must be either a gray rectangle object anchored to the text position, or a custom underline. (The only two options I can think of — anyone else?)

If it's a custom Underline, you can edit the text “inside” it and the background will grow and shrink automatically. You can see if it's underlined text in the Character Panel and/or the Control Panel.

To check if it's a separate object, enable “Show Frame Edges” and “Show Hidden Characters” — the frame of the object ought to be visible. If it's an anchored rectangle, you might see the anchor pointer inside the text.

(Edit: by the way, your screenshot didn't show for me, so the above is guesswork.)

Great ideas. I actually DID figure this out late last night though; turns out it was simply a Paragraph Rule that had the “box” as a 15% shaded tint that was offset by 0.75″. Thanks for the advice though!
