Hi, everybody I’m new to the InDesign Screct’s forum and I’m trying to solve a problem with setting the default language for new documents (it’s driving me crazy \o/).

In fact I’ve already searched the forum and found the answer that solved part of the problem:
With no document open change the Basic Paragraph Style > Advanced Character Formats > Language to the desired language (in my case Portuguese), right?

Now when I create a new document any new text frame is set to Portuguese (I can see the language in the Character Panel).

But when I place some text the problem comes back to haunt me.

      Importing TXT files
I’ve placed an unformatted TXT file and it changed the language to English USA (adding a local overriding to the basic paragraph style). Ok so I’ve turned on Show Import Options, placed it again and I could change the Language, but I wonder why it did that in the first place and wish I didn’t have to worry about this once I had already set the default language.

      Importing Word files
I’ve moved on and tried with a .docx file and the same thing happened, the language changed to English USA
So I’ve placed with Import Options turned on but this time (MS Word import options) doesn’t give me the language menu to choose from. I had to turn on Remove Styles and Formatting from Text and Tables option, it work for the language (it preserved my paragraph default language) but on the other hand it stripped away all the word formatting I wanted to preserve.

Let me put this in another way. My goal is:
Set the default language once, and make sure that every time I create a text frame or import a text file, the default language is applied.

Sorry if I didn’t make myself clear but can someone help me with this? Any ideas?
By the way I’m using InDesign CC(2014).
      Many Thanks

When you create a new document, and look in the Paragraph Styles dialog box, does the Basic Paragraph Style have a + symbol next to it? If so, there is local formatting on top of it. Also, in the Character Styles panel, be sure None is selected as the default before you import text.

I work with two languages, English and Japanese.

I do not have the import problems you have described.

Have you set the app preferences to include the additional language?

        Hi Buck
Looking into the Adobe CC Preferences documentation (https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/change-installed-language.html) what I understood is that this menu (shown in your screenshot) lets you choose a different User Interface language for newly installed applications. That is not really what I’m looking for, I want to keep working with the original English (North American) interface but using Portuguese as a default language for writing, importing and spell checking.

      Hi David
Yes when I place the TXT file there is an override (meaning the English USA language is overriding the paragraph style predefined language) and yes before placing I’ve checked and None was selected in the Character Styles panel.

So that is my question why is the English USA language overriding my default language?
The only answer I can come up with is that InDesign is preserving the TXT file “native” or “embedded” language.

I manage to workaround this by showing the import options (for TXT files) and changing the language.
And after doing that once my selected language has became the default for any new TXT placed file (so I don’t have to show the import options every time I place TXT files anymore). One down one to go.

The same thing is happening with a Word file (.DOCX) but in this case the Import Options dialog box (MSWord Import Options) doesn’t show the language menu.

So if I keep all the default import options a new style named “Normal+”, with an override and a hard disk icon besides it is created (not good).
If I check the Remove Styles and Formatting from Text and Tables option the Basic Paragraph Style is applied with no overrides but all the other Word formatting is lost (not good either).

So, in the case of Word files, what I’m looking for is a way to keep all the Word formatting only changing to my default language.
