Hi. We are typesetting a book in InDesign with many chapters. Despite setting a baseline grid on the master page and also the preference for seeing baseline grid, and having synchronized the book, it seems we have to set these – increment every blah etc – in every single chapter which is very tiring. Any suggestions?

A “Book” has nothing to do with individual files' settings … You can synchronize lots of things in a Book, though, and Master Pages is one of them. Try it — I think Baseline Grid is not a Master Page setting, but a 'global document' preference instead, but there are several different ways of defining one, so you might get lucky.

Next time, create a blank file containing just one or two pages, and all the styles and settings you can think of. Then save it as a template, and use this for all of the new documents. You still cannot change any random stuff throughout your entire book, but at least every document will start out with the same settings.

hi jongware, thanks for this. if you are on line, where would we make such a 'global document preference?' or do we have to make the template first? in the middle of the book so it would help if we could sort it out quickly without having to go back and make the template….? otherwise i guess i'll just keep going by hand. don't know if there will be a next time…! best. r

I should have explained, perhaps i was not clear, that in the preferences on our A master (on which all other masters are based) the increments are right for the baseline grid. However when we synchronise, this element does not show up on any new document based on the A master, despite other style changes, grids and guides that do.

still desperately hoping for some magical solution to change the baseline grid accross chapters in a book, ie on the master page and then snyc. we are changing the grid again having gone through each of the 60 chapters individually changing it a first time and are looking for a way to avoid going through this agonizing process again… please someone come up with a miraculous revelation!
