Separate char style for page number and prefix (included in page number)

I have page numbering that includes the section prefix (e.g. A1,A2,A3,B1,B2,B3) and I would like to have the section prefix and page number to be in separate colors.

It appears that nested or grep styles do not apply to page numbering that comes form master pages.

Is there a way to apply a character style to address this issue?

As of now, I have come up with two options:

Option 1 – Use the section marker to hold the alpha character. Two separate paragraph or character styles.

Negative: I have to manually add the section alpha character in front of each page number in the automated TOC and final PDF's page numbers will reset every section.

Option 2 – Live without the additional color and have the section prefix included into the page numbering. This would be reflected in the final PDF and also in the TOC.

      Any suggestions?

As far as I can tell it doesn't look like you can style the section prefix seperately to the page number.

Taking a look at it, it would seem that InDesign sees the page number & prefix as one character, so even if you just set a GREP to style the first character it will do both the number & the prefix.

I'd be interested to hear if there is a way to do this though, I'm sure someone here has a better idea than I :)
