      Hello all

I have inherited a long document from somewhere, which has about 300 pages split into 13 sections. The sections are headed up numerically and then the subheads are 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc etc

I have a feeling they are going to delete chapter 2 which is naturally going to cause me a huge headache – is there any way I can edit the setup of this doc so ID will do some of the heavy lifting here?

My feeling is that even if I assign all the sections with Section markers that wont help me if I delete a section and I can only use chapters if it is a Book document, which this isn’t and I have little experience with.

      So my questions:

      1. Can I fix this document so I can delete a section and have the numbers in the rest of the doc update?
      2. If I was setting this up from scratch, what is the best practice, especially with those subheads?

      Thanks

You could do this using Chapter Numbering (in Layout > Document Numbering Options). You can set the paragraph style up with chapter numbers as part of it. Sounds like a good blog post!

      Can I, by jingo?

Well I look forward to that blog post as I thought you could only have one chapter per document

Oh wait… sorry, I didn’t read your original email closely enough. You’re right re: chapter numbers.
But this makes it simpler… just assign regular paragraph numbering to everything (including the section/chapter names); then when a section/chapter is deleted, all the numbering is updated. Yes?
