Have a 800 page book all in one document with over 2000 footnotes.

I need to restart footnote numbering at 1 for each chapter (and there are many). I know I can right click on pages panel each time but IS THERE A FASTER WAY TO APPLY SECTIONS WITHIN STYLES SOMEHOW? Is there a grep or script that would apply “section” to the chapter number style?

      Thanks!

Alternatively, does anyone know if there is a way to get Indesign to RECOGNiZE the word document sections. The footnotes are correct in the word document (starting over at 1 for each chapter) but why doesn’t Indesign recognize those sections?
      thanks!

I usually like to keep all my chapters in a single document, but this sounds huge… I wonder if splitting each chapter into its own INDD file would make more sense, and then managing them with the Book panel.

We’re going to have 2 days on the topic of “Long Documents” at CreativePro Week this year (Thursday and Friday sessions). That might be a good place to get some advice, too.

It looks like this might be what you need.

If it does the job, it’s probably worth the investment, although a facility like this should be built into InDesign.
