      Hi,

I am new to InDesign and am working on a personal project with the hopes of gaining experience and the know-how to do more with InDesign in the future.

The short version: I’m looking to typeset a Hebrew book with multiple sets of footnotes on one main text, similar to how the Talmud or Hebrew Bibles are typeset. If anyone has a script or scripts they are willing to share that do this sort of thing, I would be very much appreciated. If not, an overview of the steps to take in writing said script(s) would be very helpful.

      Here’s the long version:

I am looking to typeset a Hebrew book with two or more commentaries on the main text plus images to supplement/clarify the main text and commentaries. I finished typesetting the first of eleven chapters using InDesign’s footnotes for one commentary and Peter Kahrel’s sidenotes script for the other. I was lucky that everything worked out to fill the space appropriately. However, I know that for future chapters, the length of the commentary in some parts will not work out as nicely in terms of spacing as some of the commentary is quite lengthy. Rather, I will need to have L-shaped text frames to house the commentary on the same page as the main text it is referring to.

Here is an outline of what I will need to do to accomplish everything. Comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

-Text frame for the main text on the inside margin. Always the same width (approximately 2/3 of the page width), sometimes variable height (if commentary needs to wrap under).
-Text frame for footnotes at the bottom of the page. Variable height depending on number of notes. Full width of page. Some sort of dividing line
-Text frame(s) for sidenotes on the outside margin.

I expect that In-Tools AutoFlow Pro will be helpful for the resizing of text frames to fit the various parts of the document. For footnotes, what I am doing now is actually a suggestion from Peter Kahrel, where I have an extra text frame to force the main text to be confined to the width I want, but keeps the footnotes spanning the entire width of the page. The sidenotes, I think, are where I am going to need help with scripting. The main feature I want to add to it is that it should be able to check to see where the main footnotes are and automatically continue on the next page so as not to overlap with the footnotes. Additionally, I need a way to have it change to an L-shape when necessary. I have two ideas about how to get the L-shape, but I am not sure which one makes more sense. Nor am I sure how to actually go about scripting it.

Idea 1: Create a second version of the sidenotes script with a different paragraph style, dimensions, etc. that can be used to continue and/or start adding new sidenotes when the text reaches below the main text. I assume this would require a script to run after typing in the sidenotes to readjust after everything was in place.

Idea 2: Create two threaded text frames that look like an L together. Write a script to add sidenotes to these text frames that would function like footnotes. Use AutoFlow Pro to automatically adjust the height of the two parts of the L-shaped threaded frames as needed to wrap around the main text.

Whichever path is taken, I would also want the script to automatically adjust where the main text page breaks are as needed to keep at least the beginning (preferably most of the note) on the same page as the main text it is referencing. (Or perhaps on facing pages not being particular as long as it starts on the same page, but when there is a page turn being more strict about overflow.)

Any help with this would be fantastic! I can send my indd files, or at least a PDF sample of what I have, if that will be beneficial for receiving guidance.

      Thanks!

      Justin

      Hi Justin,

If you want to create dynamic sidenotes (like Masorah’s references): https://www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/sidenotes.html
If you want to compile inline footnotes (like Hebrew Aparatus): https://www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/footnote_inline.html

      Hope these will be helpful!
      See you around,

      David.

I am working on a hebrew book using indesign and I came across a few footnotes that have a (foot)note on the footnote – see picture attached in link, I was wondering if there is any way to do that on indesign?
