I'd like to find a script that I can run on our catalog, that will create a spreadsheet listing all the item numbers, and the page number the item falls on.

With the amount of pages produced by various freelancers and co-workers, I can't be certain that they always used the character style I defined for item numbers, and didn't just set the attributes to match the style.

For that reason, the search would need to be for specific attributes, like font, point size, color, and bold.

Our part numbers vary in length and composition, with some being numbers only, and others numbers and letters. Some item numbers have hyphens.

I wonder if you could use the IndexMatic script to do this, based on a GREP expression.

I read through the IndexMatic posting, and downloaded it.

Where do I enter a GREP expression?

Isn't there a way you can give the Text Frame an Object Style – and have the Object Style invoke the Paragraph Style

So if you create an object style and make the para style for the object style be MY NUMBERS

Then when the designers send the stuff in from the template you supply, you can search for Objects

Find: for the Object Style you created

Change to: the object style you created

That should make the Text Frame invoke the Paragraph style

Does that work – if it doesn't make any sense I'll try again ;D

sorry, I think I had a brain blip; indexmatic won't let you index by grep. However, you could use Find/Change to apply a character style (use a character style that does nothing, applies no formatting, perhaps) to all the text using GREP. Then indexmatic could find text tagged with those styles.

Eugene: I'll look into that for next years book. Thanks for the suggestion!

David: I tried a version of what you suggested, and it seemed to work. I created a character style “item#”, and the only attribute I set was color (black). I did a Find/Replace, using Find Format for any word (or group of numbers) with the specific font, bold, size and color that I use for every item number, and made the Change Format the character style “item#”.

I then ran the IndexMatic script, having it look for the item# style.

I created a new document and copied one spread over from the catalog file to test this out. The spread contains 27 item numbers, and IndexMatic gave me a list of 27, so it looks like I've got what I need.

      Thanks for the help!!!
