Today I went to my script panel in order to run a paragraph sorting script I use about once a month. Today the script panel is empty. When I try to open a script I get an error message that reads:

“Cannot open the file “SortParagraph.jsx”. Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.”

I tried restarting indesign, and restarting the computer, but so far nothing has worked. If anyone has any ideas, I’d very much appreciate them.

If you.re using an updated version of Indesign, (I think) CC maintains separate installations of each version of Indesign. See if you can access the scripts by opening the previous version of Indesign. Or look in your computer for the support files. The files are probably there somewhere.

      Thanks James,
I’m using 14.0.1 and haven’t upgraded to the newest version because a colleague mentioned having some issues with the upgrade. I’m incredibly perplexed as I used the scripts last month with no problem. I’ll do some searching on my computer to see if I can find any supporting files.

“Incredibly perplexed” is a good description… this is really weird!

But I’m not entirely clear what you mean, because you said that the script is completely empty, but then you said you tried to open the script. Where are you trying to run the script from?

If the panel really is empty, this article might help:

      Thanks David,
I reached out to my company’s IT department and they said it’s probably because I was still using 2019, and adobe may be phasing out pieces of that version as 2020 is now being used.

To answer your question (in case this happens to anyone else) if I remember correctly (yesterday was a long day and this issue was at the end of it), when I clicked a script in the script folder found in the InDesign folder in the application folder it would pop the dialog box open in InDesign.

Now that we’ve updated to 2020 it works fine. And the reason I hadn’t already updated to 2020 is that I remembered my colleague saying that updating caused her issues, but what she actually had issues with was updating her mac, not her InDesign software.
