      Hey all!

Following Problem: I got a big InDesign file with over hundreds of pages, on each page there is only one file linked. This InDesign File we want to use as Template for upcoming assignments.

When a new assignments arrive, all the linked files on each page will get a new file name. There is no way to keep the old file names, all will get new file names always. So when we open the copied template and remove the old links to archive, they all become “missing links” in indesign.

Now i want to replace all links (for example 100 links) with 100 new files with different file names than before. I want that InDesign automatically replace all 100 old links with the 100 new links with different file names.

When i try that and mark all links in the link window and click on “reconnect links” i have to manually click on each of the 100 new files to replace them and mark a new one manually, because they have different file names than before.

I want that InDesign replaces all the missing links with the new files with different names, and not ask for each file everytime to replace it with another file. It is not important that all files will be replaced in a specific order, the most important is only that ALL files will be replaced in that document with ALL the new ones. The old and new files will be always the same number (100 old – 100 new files for replacing … or 20 old -> 20 new for replacing)

I hope i could explain which Script i am looking for because english is not my main language but i tried my best to ask my question here!

      Thx,
      Andreas

Is there a clear relationship between the old names and the new names? How would the script know what the new names should be?

I read this 3 times and think the task is not clear. Please provide a visal example before / after. Thanks.

Ok i try it one more time a little shorter:

1 InDesign Document with 30 pages, on each page i placede only 1 linked pdf file. So i got a Folder with 30 single pdf files, each file only placed once on each of the 30 indesign pages. Each pdf file has a different name.

      CUT

Now, i got 30 new single pdf files, all new 30 files got new names, all different than the old 30 files which were linked in the indesign document.

I only want indesign to re-link all the new 30 pdf files with the old ones automatically, no matter that the new ones got different names. Because they got different names than the old ones, i have to manually re-link every single pdf on every single side at the indesign document and tell indesign which old file to replace with which new file.

InDesign PAGE 1 -> PDF-File linked (Name: example1234.pdf) – re-link manually with new file (Name: example4321.pdf). If you do this for about 300 pages (sometimes our documents are that big) that is a big effort and takes much time.

I need a script that replaces all the new pdf files with the old linked pdf files in that indesign document.

The size and file format of the new files are still identical, only the file names are changing. The important one would be that the script automatically replaces all 30 old files with the new 30 files, in which order the new files are replaced doesn’t matter. Only make sure all old files getting replaced with the new files automatically and i don’t have to do this like 300 times manually for bis documents.

Can you now understand it? Otherwise i need to do a screen capture or something like this, but i hope you now understand my problem.

In other much shorter words: I only want to tell InDesign “you have linked this old folder with 300 files” -> NOW PLEASE “relink it with this new folder also with 300 files, but different names, but please dont care about the different names or in which order they got placed in the indesign document, just relink all 300 old files with the 300 new files from the new folder”.

If the order doesn’t matter, then the task seems clear (90% ;-)). Please mail me directly at forum@ruebiarts.de

      Kai,

      Of course, …

But I’m not sure you could play this game as that!
Imho, the op needs a concordances table!
      if yes, …
