I set a magazine and within the magazine I import a pdf of my front cover. The size is only about 10% of the cover. If I place the pdf of the front cover within the magazine – when I preflight it growls because size is 1400% – if I go into illustrator and resize the pdf, file size is huge. Smallest I can get it to is 9meg. If I bring it down in size in Photoshop and save it as a pdf, it looks pixelated. I am using CS5. Any help would be great. Cheers

You should be able to go back to the program that made the PDF (illustrator? indesign?), scale it to 10% there, and then export the PDF again.

However, I personally, would not worry about it. I would probably just ignore the preflight “error.”

Does that PDF contain any bitmap image at all? If so, Preflight is right to warn you about that.

if I go into illustrator and resize the pdf, file size is huge.

That does indicate there is some bitmap in it doesn't it? Resizing a vector-pure image is virtually “free of any cost”.
