Saving a doc in 2015 that was created in an earlier version

Having just installed InDesign 2015, I forgot what a pain it is to upgrade: when I go to save an existing file, a “save as” is required, along with the occasional chore of navigating to the place the original file is stored in order to replace it. Is there a preference I can turn off/on to get this app to automatically replace the file created in an earlier version? This torture will last months given our document library! Thanks.

Not a perfect solution, but if you open a 2014 file by using File>Open and check the “Open Original” radio button at the bottom, at least when you save the file, InDesign knows where the original file is at and takes you directly to that spot.

Thanks, MDT34. I will definitely give that a try.

Well I’ll not call it a touture, it is a feature actually that notifies us that the file we have opened was created in an older version is InDesign. This way we can retain its version, especially if the file was supplied by some client.

Agreed, Masood. I find it very convenient when the top of the file says “converted” so I know I opened it in the wrong version.

Our workflow at work is to put the ID version in the job folder name, so we all know which version to use.

But sometimes we get a file from the designer, and we have to use the same version as them.

We have some customers who still want their files done in CS6, some in CC, and some in CC2014. Heck–a week or so ago, I had to do a job in CS5.5.

We are an in-house marketing department and I can honestly say we never get ID files from an outside source. This extra step is an inconvenience that will last for months. I wish it were an option to automatically save over the original file – or not. Thanks for the input.

Oh, you hit a nerve with that one! It’s a feature I and others have been lobbying for since around 2010. InDesign really should have that as an option in Preferences (“Save Converted Files to original location”). Now that 2015 is out, I’ll be pushing for it again. Migrating preferences was the biggest pain, and a long conversation with Chris Kitchener and Doug Waterfall

You should definitely add your voice to the conversation by filing a feature request on the Adobe website and the InDesign wishlist. Anything you post there does get read, and the more people who ask for a feature, the more it bubbles up on the priority list.
