Running headers don’t wrap onto two lines

I have a running header set up to use the “category heading” paragraph style. Some of the category headings are not too long; some are longer. Problem is that if the category heading is too long, the text gets all squished together rather than wrapping onto a second line. Why, and how can I fix that?

      Thanks!

      Hi Pat

Text variables can’t split over a line ending, so unfortunately your only option is to structure your headers or template accordingly.

A similar limitation is that GREP/nested styles don’t process text variables either so I often find myself having to convert variables set up in master pages to normal text.

One day, this surely must change!
I’ve had this issue and had to get proofreaders to “shorten” headers and certain words in text for text variables.
