Rogue yellow

I'm having problems removing colour from one of my files.

Running Live Preflight on a certain InDesign file told me that one of the linked AI files had some unwanted colour in it (this is supposed to be greyscale). I changed the colours in the Illustrator file to greyscale every way I knew how (Edit Colours, swatches, checked the Raster effects settings), but still Live Preflight said that there was colour in there. I turned on Separations Preview in InDesign and it gave me a yellow plate as well as black. But showing only the yellow plate gave me a completely blank page, and when I ran my mouse over the image the ink value for the yellow stayed resolutely at 0%.

      Any ideas?

The separations panel will always show you the 4 plates of CMYK. The fact that it's 0% and completely blank means there is absolutely nothing on that plate and it will not be output.

Ah, but it didn't show me four plates, it only showed black and yellow, which made me think there was a reason for it to show. And if there's no colour, why is Live Preflight telling me there is?

I don't know. I'd have to examine the files in question. I suspect maybe there's a stray point with that colour set to 0% or something?

If it's a swatch color that's really in-use you could try deleting the swatch. You'll then get a warning asking what to replace the swatch with. Since you can't find the object that's using that particular color you can then replace it with the black swatch.

No, it's not a swatch colour either in InDesign or in Illustrator, not even when I tell it to 'add used colours' in Illustrator and 'add unnamed colours' in InDesign.

And I've cleaned up the paths, so stray points should have been deleted.

I'm really stumped. Do you think I can get away with just sending it to print as is?

      Ask your printer to check.

But I don't think there is anything to worry about

If your Separations Preview panel just showed Black and Yellow, I think there's something wrong with the panel, not the document. The panel always shows a minimum of CMYK plus C, M, Y, and K (five entries).

OK, thanks – I'll stop worrying about the image. And maybe start worrying about my Separations panel!
