Right Aligned Bullets for Arabic Text

All – I am really struggling with this.

I'm converting a document to arabic (CS4, am using World Tools plug-in) but seem unable to get the hanging bullet to align correctly. The usual “indent whole paragraph and negatively indent first line” isn't working. and having tried every combination I can think of it's just not looking right.

I suspect that I've got an incorrect right-to-left / align right/left switch wrong somewhere (perhaps) but if anyone can point me to an example of a correctly set up style I'd be very grateful.

      Thanks in advance.

      Scott,

While I have not done Arabic in InDesign nor have I used the World Tools plugin, I use the Japanese version of CS5 and have had similar type of problems trying to format English in the Japanese version. What I have discovered is that hidden through out InDesing are global format settings with an English version and a Japanese version. These settings affect line spacing, bullet list formatting and other such formatting areas. I suggest mucking around and seeing if you can some global setting that is set to English/Roman alphabet character set as opposed to an Arabic character set. I found these settings by clicking the tiny little button in the upper right corner when the cursor is in the text frame and a long list of text related setting are displayed.

There's a few things you need to do for that to work correctly:

      1) The paragraph direction must be right to left.

      2) You need to set the right indent to a positive number

      3) You need to set the first line indent to a negative number, but there's a UI bug which will not allow you to do this. The most current version of World Tools has a “hack” which allows you to set the negative first line indent in a separate dialog. Select “World Tools > Paragraph > First Line Indent…”

The UI bug has been fixed in CS5.

Thanks Melinda and Harbs for your replies.

Harbs – I have stages 1 & 2 done but having downloaded World Tools 1.0.4 for Mac (which seems to be the latest version available) I don't seem to have the First Line Indent option. Only Paragraph Styles, Justification and Numbering option appear.

Is there a later version I should be using?

      Cheers.

Harbs – Have installed CS5 version and it works perfectly, thank you.

If you can advise how to get it working in CS4 (for compatability reasons) that would be most helpful.

      Thanks again.

I'm en-route right now, and I don't have good internet access. I will check on the downloadable version when I get to my location.

      Stay tuned…

Tinkering about with CS4 and “AN Other” plugin for RTL text (sorry, Harbs), I can get bulleted Arabic text to behave correctly* with the indent set at (for example) 5 mm in both left and right indent fields in the regular InDesign Paragraph panel, and -5 mm in first line indent to bring the bullet back. It didn't work with just one of the indent fields filled in.

      * i.e. the right hand side of the first line has a bullet, the text after the tab then starts at 5 mm from the right, and the second and subsequent lines all start at 5 mm from the right.

      regards, Chris.

Sorry, forgot to add, those remarks above are with real, typed bullets.

If I used Type – Bulleted Lists – Apply Bullets, it just worked straight away. It set a right indent of 6.35 mm, and first line left indent of -6.35 mm, and a left indent of 0 mm. However, if I then try to adjust the first line left indent, it slaps me on the wrist with “invalid indent value” all the while the left indent is still 0. So there's something not quote right about the internal logic I'd guess.

Sorry for the delay. It's been a rough couple of days…

      Here's the correct link: https://in-tools.com/indesign/p…..olscs4.zip

      Thanks for your thoughts ThompsonText.

Harbs, the plug-in works perfectly in CS4 now.

Thank you all for taking the trouble to help me out, it's very much appreciated.
