Replace multiple instances of placed graphic all at once

I’m creating sheets of labels for a line of 100 products (one sheet of labels per product). The 100 label designs were created in Illustrator file (100 artboards in one .ai file). I placed Illustrator artboard #1 in InDesign, then used “step & repeat” to set up the first sheet full of 30 labels. I duplicated the first InDesign page and now I want to replace all 30 instances of artboard #1 with artboard #2.

Question 1: Is there a way to replace all 30 instances at once? (So far, it seems that my only options are to relink each of the 30 instances individually through the links panel, or to build each new page fresh using step & repeat. Find/change doesn’t work because you can’t “find” an image, as far as I know.)

Question 2: Any ideas for a better workflow for this task?

      Thank you!

See if this script works for you?

Thanks Eugene. Neat script! I like that it bypasses the links panel (saving a few clicks), but it works on only ONE image at a time. Starting a new page and using step & repeat ends up being faster.

If you duplicate your page, highlight all of the boxes with the marquee and then go to relink, it should relink everything very quickly. You might have to press OK 30 times though.

      Salieri,
Thanks for the reply This is what I had hoped would happen, but for each of the 30 I have to reselect the .ai file, then the artboard number for each instance. Is there something I can do to bypass these two steps?

You could export the AI artboards out to separate files and link them in that way – would be a pain if they change the AI file, but they shouldnt do that after its gone to artwork.

      Unless I’m misunderstanding something.

If I want to replace the same image that is used multiple times in a document, I simply select “relink all instances of.”

In the links palette, if an image is used more than once, the main piece of art will have an arrow next to it. If you click the arrow, it opens and shows where all the same pieces are.

What I do is select the art that has the arrow next to it. I right click and tell it to “relink all instances of” and it does them all.

Solved. Uncheck “import options” is what I needed to do, when I relink all instances of it.
      Thanks for your help everyone.
The script from Eugene has been a time saver for single images on other projects. Check it out!
