      Hi,
I try to prepare a solution book which has thousand problem solutions. Some pages include only one solution while the others include more than one.
I want to make running header for problem number (solution number) such as “Solution: 34-36”. To create such header, I define all solution number (digits) as character style named as “numbers”. Then I defined running header (character style) for “first on page” (named as firstnumber) and “last on page” (named as lastnumber). Then I insert text variables in master pages as below:
      Solution: < firstnumber > – < lastnumber >
The problems come up in the pages includes only one solution. In the running header for single solution page, solution number is repeated.
EX: Solution: 45-47 (For page includes solution from 45 to 47)
EX: Solution: 50-50 (For page includes only solution 50)
How can I eliminate repetition for pages have single solution?
      Thanks…

I don’t think that is possible in InDesign by itself. It may be possible with Power Headers from In-Tools.com

I can’t think of anything either. I think the only thing I can think of is to make another set of master pages set up for only one solution

      The variable would read as

      Solution: <first number>

I admit that would be a pain if there are a lot of those pages.

I’d make a new Master Page with just a text variable for “First Number” and only that.

Then apply that Master Page to those pages with just single solutions.

You could also select those pages in the Pages Panel and apply a Colour Label to make it easier to find them.

It’s a bit of manual work – but it would work.

Thank you for your kindly interest. It seems it will be painful and time-consuming work.
