removing # sign end of chapter

A blue # tag is showing up after chapter 2 in a long book I am working on. It will not let me go into the rest of the document to
do any typing. How can I delete this along with this function?

I had published chapters 1 and 2 to a PDF. Now I want to work on Chapter 3 and the curser won’t move past this # tag.

That is probably just the “end of story” character that appears when Type > Show Invisibles is turned on.

Yes, but I can’t go past it. My author has changes he wants to incorporate and I have a table to insert later in the book.

How can I get past this? I have been looking everywhere, and yes it is a visible end of story tag, but it is at the
end of chapter 2 and I need to be able to get to the rest of the book.

what I mean is that when I select the type tool the curser will not go past that end of story marker. It will not put a curser anywhere and when I go into the story editor it only shows 2 chapters, up to page 16. There are 148 pages in the book. By the way, I took your course on Lynda.com. That’s how I was able to do this.

      Help!
      and Thanks,

It sounds like Chapter two is not linked to the rest of the chapters that follow. You will need to link the last page of chapter two to the first page of chapter three.

If you don’t want to do that, then just go to the first page of chapter three and do your edits.

    • #74572

Well it had 2 ports. It looks like I fixed that. However I still cannot get the curser / type tool to pick up on page 17. Starting with page 18, I am able to do this. so on page 18 I went into the story editor and page 17 was there and the rest of book appeared to be there.

I still think this has something to do with spinning off a PDF of pages 1 through 16. That’s when the end of story # appeared. Is there anyway to get rid of this?

I really thank you for your help. I will not create anymore PDF’s that are only a portion of the book.

I still get the idea that it’s not linked properly.

If you go to the end of chapter two and delete the last hard return what happens?

If the # sign disappears, then you know that chapter three is not linked to the previous chapter.

Or it’s possible that you have a second text page over the last page of chapter two.

I don’t use the story editor, so I’m unsure if it only shows linked text or if it shows all text, regardless of being linked.

Darlene, are all these chapters in a single InDesign document? So you can see chapter 3, right?

So, Dwayne is saying that the text frames may not be THREADED together. (Dwayne, I much prefer the word “threaded” instead of “linked,” because links are what show up in the Links panel. Or some people would consider documents “linked” in a Book panel.)

InDesign is not like Word, where everything is one long story. In your case, perhaps the “story” (the chain of threaded frames) ends at the end of chapter 2. You can tell by selecting the last frame with the Selection (arrow) tool. If the square “out port” in the lower-right corner has a little triangle in it, it means it’s threaded to another frame. If it has a red # in it, then it means it’s overset (too much text to fit into the frame. If it is blank then it’s the last frame in the story.

From what you’re describing, you should be able to select the text in chapter 3 just by clicking it with the Text tool. If not, it’s also possible it’s locked for some reason.

This is all one document, which will be a book. It just has the main content right now. If I delete the last return, then the # moves up. The type tool / curser won’t move past it.

The port at the lower end of the page is not overset, and has a blue arrow in it. It looks as if it is linked properly.

If I go to page 17, the start to a new chapter, when I type T for the text tool the curser then jumps back to page 16 right
in front of the # sign. If I select page 18, I can get the type T tool to put the curser there. Is it possible to send a screen shot or something like that?

This is my first project with InDesign, so I could have done something somewhere. The good news is the author really likes the formatting but it also was so clear that he could see his content still needed editing.

      Thanks

Darlene–you can’t post a screenshot directly in the forum, but you can if you put in a hosting site (such as drop box, 4shared, etc.).

Or, if you need, I can post my email address and you can send it to me for me to look at.

David–I see your point about the terminology. I guess old habits die hard for me. I am so used to calling text boxes linked, as well as referring to text wrap as runarounds. I blame it on my old Quark days, as well as the folks I work with who still use the outdated terms.

      • #74612

It sounds like you have one text frame on top of another. Drag the selection arrow over this frame from the side, then shift+click on top of it. If there was only one, you’ll have selected nothing. If there were more, you’ll still see the selection markers. If so, you need to check which one is the faulty and which one you want to keep.

      Jongware,

Thanks, I did try that and there was an extra text box from the previous page. However it did not seem to be the problem. I did correct it though. Good Idea to check. I will remember that.

      Dwayne,

I think I would like you to take a look at the document. I don’t have a dropbox so I would like to email it. There are images to the document so would I also have to send the images file?

I am able to edit the text in the story editor. But I don’t have access to that page. I randomly checked and I can get the type tool to work on other pages.

      Thanks

        Darlene

Go ahead and email me. I won’t need the artwork though. Just the file and fonts (at least the text font).

        You can email me at:

        d w a y n e . h a r r i s @gmail.com

(You need to remove the spaces).

Depending on when you send it, I can check it tonight after work or if you sent too late, I can check first thing tomorrow morning.

        Dwayne

Issue has been solved. Darlene emailed me the file, and it was a case of chapters not being threaded together. There were also some blanks pages that were linked to each other, but nothing in them.

      But all has been fixed.

    • #74704

Thanks to Dwayne. It really looks good now. I can edit chapter 3.
