Remove character in running head

I’m working on a book and have running heads setup to pull in Section Title and Chapter Title. Both these titles have a bracket before and after–e.g., {Title}. The client doesn’t want the brackets in the running headers. I have paragraph styles applied to the running heads on the master page. Is there a Grep Style, or some other way, I could apply to the RH style or my text variable to get rid of the brackets?

What about approaching it from the other direction, applying the brackets via a style where you want brackets and having the running heads pick up the “pure” text?
      Regards, Chris.

How do I exactly apply the brackets as a style?

I always use character styles for my running heads, instead of paragraph.

Basically–set up a character style for the running heads and leave it totally blank. Then nest it in your paragraph style sheet.

For example, let’s say your chapter title is called CT.

      In your nesting you would:

      1) None through [
      2) running head up to ]

      And that’s it.

So created a new blank Character Style called running head and then applied it to the running text variable head on my master page. Set up the Nested style as you suggested and it doesn’t work. My text variable is set as a paragraph style and keyed to Section Title. If i change it to a character based running head, nothing gets put into the running head. Am I doing something wrong?

I never use the section. I take it you are telling the chapter where to start and typing in the running head in the section start box?

If so, that’s not how I do my running heads.

I am currently paging a book with chapter titles on the recto pages. I created the empty character style called “runningheads.” In the variable I defined it as RH and said to use the character style sheet “runningheads.” Then I inserted the variable at the top of my master page where the running head goes. I then went to my paragraph style sheet and nested “runningheads”. And it worked.

Scratch my earlier comment about reversing the logic – you can’t use GREP style to add brackets (unless someone knows different).

I got the nested style method to work as follows:
For chapter title, apply a para style to the text (which includes the brackets), with 3 nested styles in this order:
      – “header text not for header” through 1 (
      – “header text for header” up to 1 )
      – “header text not for header” through 1 )

i.e. 3 nested style instances, but only two differently-named character styles in there “header text not for header” and “header for header”. Both these character styles can be identical.

Then, set up the text variable for the running header, as:
      – Running Header (Character Style)
      – Style = header text for header
      – Use = FIrst on Page

Only potential problem is perhaps forgetting the opening bracket when you type the actual text.

Your suggestion worked. Just had to create one extra header for text character style for my Section Title so it didn’t link to the Chapter Title.

        thanks for all your help.

Will try this later. I assume I will need to apply the character style “header text for header” to the brackets in my Chapter Title?

If this involves typing in the running head in the section start, and the variable inserted is “section marker,” then you don’t need to do any of that.

You just have to set up your running head variable using the character style, and insert that variable instead of a section marker.

        And when you nest it:

        1) none through the opening bracket
        2) running head up to the closing bracket
        3) none through end nested style

        Or maybe I’m misunderstanding.

      Hi jstern,

I’ll suggest you to choose GREP. Let me try to explain:

As you said, you have a paragraph style associated with the running heads. That’s good, half of our work is done.

      Just follow the steps:

      1. Create another Character Style and name it DISAPPEAR with settings like:
Font size: 0.1pt, Horizontal and Vertical Scaling: 1%, Character Color: None

      2. Edit your paragraph style for your RH

      3. Go to GREP Style panel, click on ‘New GREP Style’ button

      4. Select the DISAPPEAR character style for “Apply Style:”

      5. Click on the Text field next to “To Text:” and delete the default \d+ and write a simple code: [\[|\]]

Remember it is Open square bracket, slash,Open square bracket,Pipe sign, slash,Closing square bracket, Closing square bracket

      6. Click OK to exit out the Paragraph Style Options

      That’s it !!!

I would like to have the feedback.

      Masood

Just tried this and no luck.

So my running heads are set up on my master pages as Type variables. I have two variables: Running Header (for the left page) and Running Head Right for the right page. Running Header is keyed to Section Title and Running Header Right is keyed to Chapter Title. Both the Section Titles and Chapter Titles in the text of the book have Brace charteracters ({ }) before and after.

I created a new Character style as you suggested (based on none with the settings you suggested). Then edited my paragraph style which is applied to my running header text variables on the master page, adding the GREP line you suggested. It didn’t work. Then since I used braces and not brackets, I changed the \[ and \] to \{ and \} to see if that would work. Still not working.
