So, I’ve got a simple double-sided business card layout. I’ve applied a Photoshop doc for two different backgrounds, and naturally I use layer comps. Here’s the problem. When I update the Photoshop doc for whatever reason, the placed layer comps are wiped out in InDesign, defaulting to Last Layer State for both. I have to go back in and manually relink.

You may or may not know there’s an option in the Layer Options dialog box that lets you control whether changes will wipe out the choices there. However, that is always overridden if you edit the PSD file and add or remove layers.

Acknowledged. Thank you for your reply. I actually did some follow-up research and found this article by Bob Levine right here in InDesign Secrets: “Hey, Buddy. Can You Spare a Layer?” He offers a promising pre-planning work around — simply add one or two blank layers and turn off the visibility; if you need to add a layer, one or two are already there, kinda like spare tires, and presumably this won’t reset the layer comps.
