Question about single tab–can't stop it from driving page number to next line?

I'm teaching myself how to do the dotted lines in the Table of Contents–watching David's video.

David states that you tab right after the Chapter title and before the page number, and that it will go half an inch. When I tab, it pushes the page number to the next line–looks like it pushes it a good 3″, not 1/2″. How do I stop that? It also seems to prevent me from adding the dotted lines.

D, select the text with the “text” (T) tool. “ctrl-shift-T” gives you the Tabs panel. Put your cursor (just above the rule in the tab panel) where you want your tab (the little arrows above show you which tab you want (3rd one is right justified) and click. For the dotted lines put a dot in the “leader” option. Click in the text, and if you didn't already put the “tab”, hit “tab” and there's your dotted line. Select all the table of contents and put the tab in the tab panel. You can make para styles with different tab positions for more accurate working.

Hi Gert. Unfortunately, no Tabs panel comes up when I do ctrl-shift-T. Perhaps it's because I have CS5.

      But if I select Type>Tabs…voila!

Also, I don't have a Text tool, but I think you are talking about my Type tool. And I selected Right Justified, then put the dot in the “Leader”, then clicked on the text, then pushed Tab….and all I get is a tabbed forward page number and it goes to the next line.

I guess I'm going to have to give up on this one, too, and just hold down that dot for each line. Sad.

D, some things to be checked. In the tabs panel, did you click just above the rule to set the tab? A little arrow should appear and the distance from the maargin is indicated. If this is not the case, then do that first. Putting the dots: select the tab (the little arrow on top of the rule) and put a dot in the leading field.

How many tabs were put in the original file? If more then one, delete them all, and put one back (or leave one).

just watch this and it will become clear:

I'm guessing that you may have other tab stops in the paragraphs that you need to get rid of.

Here is a great multi-article piece on tab stops and leaders:
