      Hello there!

Working on adding emboss and bevel effects to a book covers title using Indesign cs4 and Illustrator if need be.

On the Indesign side of things the issue I am having is once I add the effect, it is clear on screen and print that the quality of the effect is low resolution. It just doesn't look good. In other words, the text has a slight jagged look or maybe even a slight pixelated effect.

I decided to head over to illustrator cs4 and create the title there and then just place it back into Indesign. I make sure that the dpi is set to 300 and I give the text a 3d extrude and bevel effect and distort. It seems to have the same issue as the indesign text does. It looks a tad pixelated.

Anyone willing to let me know how to use these great effects and still have the text and effect look high quality?

      Thanks so much,

      Jordan

It could depend on the “Transparency Flattener” setting in the print dialog box, you need to select the right setting (High Resolution for example).

      Jordan-

Has the text been scaled since you applied the bevel? If your scaling preferences are set to Adjust Scaling Percentage, your effects can look low res both onscreen and in print. You can fix this by choosing Redefine Scaling as 100% from the Control panel menu.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I checked both, and it looks like I have the transparency flattener set to high resolution as well as my scaling set to 100% on both the x and y. I'm also working with a text InDesign document set in Adobe Garamond, and it also seems to print out rather poorly – it looks pixilated and not clear. To make sure it wasn't my printer, I printed a document in Word, also set up in Adobe Garamond and it looked great! I feel like it must be a setting but I can't imagine what it could be.

I am working on a book cover and am using Adobe Jenson font for the title. When I print it out with no effects, it's fine. But when I add the bevel and emboss attribute to the title, it becomes jagged looking along the inner and outer edges on both the screen and when I print it out. I then went into Illustrator and created the title in that program and added the 3D extrude and bevel and free distort attributes, and same thing, quality not good.

I am stumped and would appreciate any other thoughts!

Are you able to create a pdf that looks good?

If so it may be the printer you are using that can't handle the transparency effects, is it a postscript device?

The thing is you should be able to output beautiful clean effects laiden pages with both ID and Illustrator with the correct settings.

      Thanks for the reply.

The pdf's look much the same and that is using many different presets as well as the preset the printer sent.

I am so confused at this point.

      Thanks,

      Jordan

Jordan, is it the effect itself (the highlight and shadow of the bevel) or the outline of the letters that's getting jagged?

Hey there! Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to this. Been out of town and all that jazz…

From what I can tell it is the effect (mostly) that is getting jagged. Are you onto something??

Thanks for all of the help,

      Jordan
