    Hi. I’ve created an interactive fixed layout epub document in InDesign. I’ve used Adobe’s Publish Online feature and it works beautifully—

    But…my client wants to host the files on their web server and Abobe doesn’t allow access to the code when using publish online feature.
    When I export out of InDesign with EPUB Fixed Layout, I get a one single file—no code. Again, the file looks and works beautifully, but can access the code and assets.
    I’ve tried to use a third party softward in5, but when I publish with this software, I do not get the same beautiful results—links and buttons are lost; animation timing is out of place and other problems—kinda like starting over and troubleshooting problems that aren’t really in the original document.

    I’d like to export out of InDesign and be able to access the code and assets. Is there a solution to this problem??

    in5 is certainly the best option for getting HTML5 out of InDesign. I suggest contacting them and seeing if you can get the weirdness resolved. That shouldn’t happen, I think.

    I recommend using Readium to host the fixed layout epub on your client’s web server. Take a look at this article and see more info on Readium and an example of a self hosted EPUB at the end. https://bookmachine.org/2016/09/28/share-advance-copies-ebooks-without-suitable-device/

    My company’s software CircularFLO actually offers a free extra feature to publish EPUBs straight to the browser using Dropbox and I can help you prepare something similar that works on your client’s web site too.

    That’s a cool idea, Ken!
    But of course that requires people (the audience) to install the Readium Extension into the Chrome browser. I don’t think it works any other way, right?

    Well yes and no!

    You DO need Chrome for the Readium Extension but you can use their Readium JS in any modern browser.

    Have a look at my quick explanation at the end of the blog post above and the example here https://bit.ly/2dmmbPY for an example which works nicely in Safari.

    Holy mackerel! I’m glad you’ll be at The InDesign Conference, Ken, because I want to see how you did that. Yes, this works in Safari with no additional extensions… at least most of it did.

    The only thing that’s not working is the video on the Raw Power page… oh wait, yes it does… I had to click the incredibly tiny play button in the lower-left corner. You might want to create a play button that covers the whole video, or something like that.

    It is not possible to create fixed layout EPUB from InDesign CS6 alone.

    However it is possible to use my company’s software CircularFLO to create fixed layout EPUBs and Amazon fixed layout KF8s using native InDesign CS6 files or from PDFs using InDesign CS6. Have look here https://www.circularflo.com

    Just an update on this for those who may be interested…

    Dropbox have retired their public folders I have moved this example to here https://www.circularsoftware.com/CircularFLO_Online/readium.html?epub=../../CircularFLO_v5_1_promo_CC2015

    Also Readium will be retiring their Chrome extension in 2018. However, this DOES NOT mean the end of Readium, as the Readium project is still going strong see more info here https://www.edrlab.org/readium/

    Solutions like this example which uses the (Readium CloudReader) and products based around that mean hosting your EPUB content on your own website is possible.
