I’m hoping someone can help me with a couple of problems/glitches with footnotes in ID CS6.

First, I can’t work out how to get the first line in a column of footnots on each new page to align to the baseline grid. None of the options in the footnote style dialogue seem to deliver that. Basically, I want a consistent amount of space (namely, one line) between the bottom line of the main text and the first footnote. If there’s another way of achieving that, I’d be keen to hear it!

Also, my client wants footnotes to begin from 1 on each page. That setting works, except on a particular page (the right-hand one in a spread), where the notes are numbered continuously from the preceding (left-hand) page. No matter how many times I switch between settings and switch back, I can’t seem to eliminate this glitch. I can just insert note numbers manually, but that seems like bad practice!

      Any suggestions most welcome…

You set the footnote to align to baseline grid i a paragraph style.
You set a paragraf style to the foot note in “”Document footnote options”

      Thnaks for this.

I did think of that. But won’t a paragraph style applied to the footnotes treat each new footnote as a new paragraph? And then each new footnote will have its first line aligned to the baseline grid? That’s not what I want – I want just the first line of the notes *within each column* (in this case = on each page) aligned to the grid, and the rest unaligned.

So I don’t think this will work – unless I’ve misunderstood you?
