      Good morning,

I am new at creating EPubs in Indesign. I’ve taken Anne-Marie’s excellent course on creating and exporting to EPub in CS6 on lynda.com and so far everything has worked just fine, except for the following issue:

The publication I am converting to EPub has quite a lot of text boxes. I’ve rasterized these boxes, as suggested by Anne-Marie, and have exported them to EPub. This works well. The only problem is, their sizes seem to vary. All of the text boxes share the same width, but they vary in length. Some of the shorter ones take up an entire frame on the Ipad. Others remain quite small, making it difficult for the viewer to read the text.

My question is: how can I make sure that all my text boxes are displayed in the same size when I export them?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hmm. I think I suggested that you rasterize a text frame only OCCASIONALLY, like if you need to retain a type treatment for a headline that’s not supported in EPUBs (that is, that you can’t do in HTML/CSS).

Otherwise, all text should be exported as live text.

Thanks for your reply, Anne-Marie. I understand your point, however I have a lot of text that appears in distinct boxes, which are required to set certain text apart from the main body of the publication. I would like to ensure that these text boxes are consistent in width when exported. Or, alternatively, is there a way to set “live” text apart from the main body of text other than using rasterized text boxes?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Put your “text that appears in distinct boxes” (I’ll call these “sidebars” from now on) into their own text frames. Give them a fill color of what you want and a width of what you want.

Then *anchor* these sidebar text frames into the main text stream. Set a wrap around them if you want, if you want the main body copy to flow to the left or right of the sidebars.

When you export from CS6, the sidebars will be intact. Live text. I would recommend you use CS6’s Object > Text Frame Options > Autosize to set the frame to increase its height automatically. The width will be the same as in your ID file.

Morgane I know I covered this too in the course. ;-D Sorry can’t remember the exact video.
