      Hi all,

Thanks for reading! I have a problem when I load documents in a new installation of InDesign 6. I have a left-justified column; when I load the document, the tracking has the characters all smashed together in order to fit it inside the text box correctly. When I hit the spacebar or type inside the text box, the tracking jumps back to normal, but the text exceeds the length of the text box.

Can anyone help? Could this be caused by an error with the font? Or because the document was designed on a Mac and I’m using a PC?

If you export the document as IDML (file > export) and then open that IDML file, what does it look like?

I’m leaning towards a font issue, especially since you said it was created on a Mac and now being opened on a PC.

What sort of fonts were used (i.e., postscript, true type, open type)?

Did they supply the fonts or do you have to use your own version?

Unless things have changed, I believe that certain characters that are on a Mac won’t work on PC. Ligatures come to find. If the Mac version used true ligatures, then they won’t come across that way on a PC. Of course, that was a long time ago I had read that and that was with Quark. I don’t know if it’s still true or an issue for InDesign.

In any event, I’m thinking font issues.

Thanks for your responses! Reinstalling the font (Palatino Italic TT) did not help matters. There are other fonts on the pages that I don’t have installed, but I can’t imagine how they would affect Palatino Italic. When I exported the document as an IDML file, the tracking returned to normal, but it still wasn’t correct (meaning it still didn’t fill the space correctly and text exceeded the text boxes). The problem does seem restricted to Palatino Italic. Palatino Regular does not have these problems.

Hi all, I’m still having this problem. I’m also looking for advice on how to get ITC Stone fonts. Are they included in any font packages I could look out for?

Because the text expanded after you opened the IDML file, I’d say that the expanded version is “correct” and the squished into the frame version is the anomaly. Don’t know why that would have happened, but you would likely need to use tracking or H&J settings to tighten it up, such as:

As for getting ITC Stone, that is a commercial font, so you’d need to buy it at fonts.com or Adobe or some other distributor.
